5 Essential Spring Tasks to Prep Your Southeast Oklahoma Home

5 Essential Spring Tasks to Prep Your Southeast Oklahoma Home

March 17th has arrived, and with it comes that unmistakable Oklahoma spring energy — warmer days, blooming trees, and the realization that your home needs some attention after winter. Whether you're in Broken Bow, Hochatown, or anywhere in Southeast Oklahoma, these five essential tasks will set you up for a great spring and summer.

1. Inspect and Clean Your Deck

Your deck took a beating over winter. Ice, moisture, and debris have been sitting on those boards for months. Here's what to do now:

Clear Everything Off: Remove furniture, planters, and grills. Sweep away leaves, pine needles, and dirt that's accumulated in corners and between boards. Debris traps moisture against wood, which leads to rot.

Check for Damage: Walk the entire deck and look for:

  • Loose or popped nails
  • Cracked or splintered boards
  • Wobbly railings (shake them — they should be solid)
  • Soft spots in the wood (sign of rot)

Clean Thoroughly: Use a deck cleaner designed for your wood type. Avoid pressure washers on older decks — they can splinter wood fibers. A stiff brush and garden hose work great for most jobs.

Seal or Stain (If Needed): If water soaks into your deck boards instead of beading up, it's time to reseal. Early spring is perfect for this — you want dry weather and moderate temps (60-80°F) for proper curing.

2. Walk Your Fence Line

Fences don't last forever, especially when they're dealing with Oklahoma's temperature swings and humidity. A spring inspection catches problems before they become expensive replacements.

Look for Leaning Posts: Posts that lean or wiggle are losing their footing. If caught early, you can often reset them without replacing the entire section.

Check Fence Panels: Warped, cracked, or rotting panels need replacement. One bad panel can pull down adjacent sections, so don't wait.

Tighten Hardware: Screws and nails work loose over time. Walk the fence with a drill and tighten everything you can reach. It takes 20 minutes and can add years to your fence's life.

Clear Vegetation: Vines, shrubs, and grass growing against your fence hold moisture and speed up rot. Trim everything back at least 6 inches.

3. Prepare for Tornado Season

Let's be real: tornado season is coming, and Southeast Oklahoma gets its share. March through June means being ready.

Secure Loose Outdoor Items: Patio furniture, trash cans, grills, decorations — anything that can become a projectile in high winds needs to be stored or anchored. That lightweight resin chair turns into a missile at 70mph.

Trim Overhanging Branches: Dead limbs and overhanging branches are the #1 cause of storm damage to homes and fences in our area. Get them down now, before a storm does it for you.

Check Roof and Gutters: Clear gutters and downspouts so heavy rain can drain properly. Look for loose or damaged shingles. Small roof issues become big leaks in a thunderstorm.

Know Your Safe Zone: Make sure everyone in your household knows where to shelter during a tornado warning. Interior rooms on the lowest floor, away from windows. Keep a weather radio, flashlight, and first aid kit there.

4. Service Your HVAC Before It Gets Hot

Oklahoma summers are brutal. You don't want your AC dying on the first 95°F day in May.

Replace Air Filters: Cheap and easy. Do this every 1-3 months depending on usage. Dirty filters make your system work harder and drive up electric bills.

Clean Outdoor Unit: Clear debris, leaves, and grass clippings from around your outdoor AC unit. Hose it down gently (top to bottom, never spray upward into the fan).

Schedule Professional Service: Have an HVAC tech inspect and tune up your system now, before summer demand hits. They'll catch small problems before they become emergency repairs.

Check Ceiling Fans: Flip the switch to counterclockwise (blades should push air down). Clean the blades — dust buildup reduces airflow and can strain motors.

5. Tackle Exterior Paint and Caulk Touch-Ups

Small gaps and peeling paint let moisture into your home's structure. Spring is the perfect time to seal things up.

Check Window and Door Caulk: Look for cracks, gaps, or missing caulk around windows and exterior doors. Recaulking costs almost nothing and keeps water out.

Inspect Exterior Paint: Peeling or bubbling paint isn't just ugly — it exposes wood to moisture damage. Scrape, prime, and repaint problem spots before they spread.

Seal Deck-to-House Connection: Where your deck meets the house is a common leak point. Check the flashing and caulk. Water intrusion here can rot your rim joist (expensive fix).

Spring in Southeast Oklahoma is short. By the time June rolls around, you'll be dealing with heat and humidity. Use these mild March and April days to get your home ready for the season ahead.
